Amelia Otter's Mischief in the Water

A Children's Book by Luke McLelan and Nate Banuelos

Amelia Otter’s Mischief in the Water is a beautifully illustrated children’s book about a curious, but misunderstood sea otter whose playful habit of “borrowing” surfboards turns her from a mischievous outlaw into a beloved local legend.

The story is based on the true story of Otter 841, who was raised in captivity in an aquarium in the Monterey Bay and eventually released into the wild. She made national headlines when she started stealing (and occasionally biting) surfboards from surfers at Steamers Lane in Santa Cruz, CA. Despite multiple failed capture attempts, the decision was made to let her live free in the wild. It was later discovered that she gave birth to a pup and became a major success story for marine captivity programs.
